Every generation passes their romantic customs on to the next generation. Many little things are still present in dating. Men still give their dates flowers at the beginning of a date. Chivalry is always a part of classic romance. I know friends that open the door for a lady, hold her chair, and help her with her coat during a date. Dinner is still an important part of dating. Usually, the dinner dates are in restaurants that have romantic settings. The settings are low lighting with small, intimate tables and peaceful music. After dinner, most people in my generation go out dancing or watch a movie. Ballroom dancing is what I consider to be the romantic type of dancing. A man and a woman dance closely and elegantly moving across the floor staring into each other’s eyes. Any movie that has some kind of romance in it is always great for a date. Romantic movies bring couples closer together at least for a short while. During a blossoming relationship, couples may write love letters to each other, which is another part of romance. The most important custom that is passed on to every generation is the extravagant wedding. Most couples want to have a beautiful wedding that they will remember forever. An extravagant wedding dress with beautiful bridesmaids in an exotic setting can make a wedding romantic.

Almost every type of media has romance. First, magazine companies know what women want and develop magazines related to their desires. Some women tell me many magazines for Generation X such as YM and Vogue contain articles on romance. The articles are about how to revitalize romance in relationships and continue to keep romance alive. Romance novels are also another source of media where people can find romance. Romance novels for my generation make a one billion-dollar industry. Some people even get ideas from these romance novels and use them to better their relationships. Generation X has a new form of romance music. Rhythm and blues, or "R&B" for short, is music many people find to be romantic and stimulating in developing relationships. The slow R&B sounds of the music groups, Boys II Men and All 4 One, are examples of music that are about love and romance. Television is another medium that has many programs with the combination of romance and Generation X. Friends and Party of Five are two good examples. Friends is a sitcom about the lives of three men and three women who are intimate friends. This show closely relates to the love and friendship aspect of Generation X in a humorous way. Each friend experiences romance with either one another or someone else on the show. In Party of Five, the television drama series revolves around the struggles of five siblings raising each other and the struggles of life in general. The Generation "X’ers" in this show also try to find a little romance among themselves with other people. The most romantic couple in the series is the characters of Scott Wolf and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Most people in Generation X can relate to these two people’s development of their relationship. Recently, romantic movies are a huge hit with Generation X. The comedies Chasing Amy, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and There’s Something about Mary contain people of Generation X. In each of these movies, a character is trying to win the heart of another person anyway they can. All these movies have romance with a humorous twist only Generation X can create. For the pure romantic drama side of Generation X, Hollywood has Titanic and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Both of these movies star one of the considered leaders of Generation X, Leonardo DiCaprio. In these movies, romance forms with two people. All of these movies, as well as the rest of the media, are enjoyed by every generation. The media gives people what they want and that is romance.

Generation X is using computers and the Internet more efficiently than previous generations. With this increase in usage, more and more people from Generation X are looking for romance and love on the Internet since its development. Some people find love on the Internet through Internet Relay Chat or IRC for short. IRC allows people to meet in chat rooms and carry on a virtual relationship. These can be public meetings where others see and participate in real-time typed exchanges, or they can be private rooms, where two or more can be alone. Web sites offer chat as well as message boards for people. Messages boards are where someone can leave a message such as a personal ad and wait for someone to respond to that message. People use electronic mail to keep up with the person that they met in a chat room or message board.
